To say the Fashion Industry has a diversity problem is putting it pretty lightly.
Ethnic segregation has played a significant role throughout history, especially in fashion. Racial discrimination which once held back the careers of black models in the fashion industry is now slowly but surely changing. This change in fashion relates back to many different subcultures, one being the rap and hip-hop music industry.
This music subculture influenced the use of more interracial models displayed in fashion magazines, and some hip-hop artists have now become the biggest commercial influencers in the fashion industry.
Adidas’s collaboration with Kanye West has definitely shown at large how music and fashion work so well together. And even just Kanye himself has played a very iconic role within fashion, one of his first collaborations was a massive influence as it was away from the direct stereotypes of streetwear fashion and brands and saw the birth of high end and
hip-hop.
Recently the hip-hop artist Kanye has taken a step back from music and fashion
collaboration and taken more to his solo fashion career; ‘Yeezy’.
Kanye has definitely introduced ethnicity into fashion through this brand. The Yeezy season 4 show saw only mixed race models casted, this completely switched the roles of the usual controversy caused by model casting choices which have been seen through history as predominantly white.

Grime music is also starting to take over from hip-hop and rap but still
continues with the same background as these music cultures. Grime artist Stormzy
who revitalized the 3 stripe Adidas tracksuit and shell toe original superstars
featured as the first grime artist to be on the cover of ID magazine.

“Stormzy from south London—"man of the moment, man of the people" and the grime
scene's crown prince—has become the first grime MC to grace the cover of esteemed
British magazine i-D. As a part of the style publication's "Game-Changing Issue", i-D
chronicles the star's trailblazing DIY movements across music, fashion, and art”.
Aswell as featuring on the front cover, Stormzy’s fashion career has also taken to
collaborating with brands to create his own limited edition collections.
This movement in fashion for black artists has definitely expanded and the link between
fashion and music has never been stronger.
